Significant openings include Porter House at the James Beard House, Leo Saladino’s Macao, Chirico by Mario Batali, and Maketto East Coast Bistro in Manhattan, all in the winter season.
In addition, Mozza Toscana will move into Mozza Toscana Ristorante in Malibu. Recently, Sage Grill in Williamsburg announced plans to open an outpost in Portofino, a West Side West restaurant district. The new restaurant will provide a counterpart to The Senseies new restaurant in a space formerly occupied by Spina Rosso. Co-owner, Nick Stewart, told the Staten Island Advance that the new location will mimic the restaurant’s open kitchen concept.
Meanwhile, on Long Island, fine dining escapes across the causeway are all seeing stiff competition as local and New York City operators flock to the region’s multitude of prime dining options. More than a decade ago, Tim James, the head of Long Island restaurant law, decided to pick up stakes. Now, James and his team are practicing their skills in San Francisco and Los Angeles.
