Brad Falchuk and Daniel Zelman to write and exec produce fourth season of ‘Succession’

Brad Falchuk (Glee) and Daniel Zelman (Damages) will be returning to HBO for a fourth season of their show Succession, the network said in a statement.

Last summer, Netflix poached the creators away from the premium cable network and ordered a fourth season of the series, which follows the travails of the Roy family’s personal and corporate lives. The season finale earlier this year saw the ruthless Mr. Roy (Jeremy Strong) swap his typical weapons and switch channels entirely, switching over to the FX network’s Tyrant as his family’s future was put in jeopardy.

Succession has been a strong performer for HBO in several areas: through its first three seasons, the show’s Emmy nomination total has been pretty strong, and in a year of less-than-stellar ratings for top-tier HBO shows like Sharp Objects and The Deuce, the audience has been consistently solid. Season 3 is also the highest-rated season for the show yet, and was pretty much the highest-rated show on HBO at the time of its cancellation, at least compared to what was considered a slim roster.

There was a hint that there could be some (fewer) more of the Roy family’s exploits ahead when Mr. Zelman let slip in February at the Paleyfest Fest that he already had story ideas for a possible fourth season, and Mr. Falchuk made more revealing comments about the future of the show last month.

“We’re talking about what it will be. We think it could go on for six or seven seasons. That’s my [idea],” he said at Paleyfest. He went on to explain that he’d received phone calls from the HBO leadership and had “some ideas about how we’d keep the show going.”

No word yet on whether the Roy family will face off against the Sopranos once again in the Upside Down.
