Powerful Nor'easter hits New England with hurricane-force winds

The nor’easter delivering heavy snow and hurricane-force winds pummeled parts of the Northeast on Monday, leaving thousands without power and disrupting the commute in parts of New England.

As of Tuesday morning, 175,000 customers were without power in Connecticut, New York, Rhode Island and New Jersey, according to reports from utilities.

Matthew Wilson, a meteorologist with StormTeam4, told Fox News that much of northern New England is being hit by a category 4 storm with major hurricane-force winds.

He said hundreds of homes and businesses lost power as trees toppled over and many other trees were uprooted. The winds created a dangerous situation, causing downed power lines and spinning over them.

The nor’easter resulted in flight cancellations across much of the Northeast. More than 5,700 flights were canceled on Monday, according to flight tracking website FlightAware.

The Washington Post reported that trains across much of the Northeast were stopped or delayed. Amtrak reported that it has suspended all service between New York and Boston until Tuesday afternoon because of significant track damage and two severe snow storms.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Monday that he will declare a state of emergency in advance of the storm.

He activated four state shelters to aid residents seeking safety amid the storm.
