The player whom police say abused his Tinder date so badly that she later died has been charged with second-degree murder, according to Virginia Tech News Service. Markus K. Volz, 20, of Winchester, has been held on $2 million bond since he turned himself in on Monday and is facing charges in the beating death of 25-year-old Tracey Adams. Volz and Adams had met on the dating app Tinder and were watching the Virginia Tech-Georgia Tech football game together on Saturday when she met with him for drinks and then went back to his hotel room, according to Lt. Mel McMillian. It was later reported that the woman, who was not a student at the school, died from head injuries sustained during the struggle. Adams also suffered from head injuries prior to traveling to the hotel, the police report.
After the college football game, there was a dispute between the two in the parking lot and witnesses saw Volz “hit [Adams] around the head at least three or four times,” McMillian said. He added that he was also “hitting her while she was lying on the ground … It appears that he had hit her with his fist numerous times.” The victim was later taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
The police report also stated that it appears that Volz’s injuries were self-inflicted. When his arrest was announced on Monday, they also announced they were searching for two other suspects in the case. They have reportedly not been found.
Volz’s coach at Virginia Tech, Justin Fuente, issued a statement after the announcement, saying that he would not discuss Volz’s arrest at this time but that “all we can do is stand behind Markus.” As of Tuesday, Virginia Tech had not filed any complaints about Volz’s recent behavior.
