WATCH: Gas Station Shoppers See Fake Credit Card Skimmers!

A video is blowing up online showing gas station shoppers getting gas near, and some of them actually get their credit card skimmers removed.

The people in the video are set up on a little bench at a gas station in Cincinnati with a camera recording everything.

They watch anxiously as the first camera gets clear and cuts to the gas pump and credit card reader.

Some two minutes later, the credit card reader is yanked off the pump and a laptop is spotted moving at the point of sale. The video shows the skimmer was removed but not before a stranger tried to withdraw money from someone’s account.

It appears someone put the skimmer on the pump and then used their laptop to see what the entire transaction looked like.

You can see a few interesting things. First, the handheld scanner seems to be used only to verify that the card is the proper card, something drivers would normally do. The gas station attendant is always watching.

Second, the devices look like they were bought in a back alley and appear to be made of plastic, possibly PVC.

Finally, the phone seems to be held about two inches away from the device. Even if a thief scans your card using the skimmer on the device, the real skimmer will be visible and in close proximity to the terminal.

This is a prime example of how a criminal who relies on any type of counterfeit scanner could cause much more damage than just the credit card fraud.

If you get a tip that a skimmer has been placed on your gas pump, keep an eye on the person and your entire transaction until a cop shows up or calls you.
