A Texas woman was killed and another woman injured when a stolen big rig crashed into their home in Palm Coast, a northwestern city about an hour southeast of Orlando. Crystal McCombs and her aunt, Sandra Mead, lived in the home with five other family members, including three children. They were all inside when the crash occurred.
The truck driver, Rodney Tyson, 58, is accused of stealing the big rig, and then leading sheriff’s deputies on a 12-mile chase down I-95 and I-75 before crashing into a cul-de-sac and then into a mobile home early Sunday morning. The crash was captured on residents’ home security cameras, and images show the truck plowing into McCombs’ home as she crouches out of view of the camera.
The truck driver suffered minor injuries, and one of the children inside the home was also hurt. Two other children, an 8-year-old girl and 9-year-old boy, were unharmed. The sheriff’s office believes that Tyson also lives in the area and may have been visiting a friend.
Since most all of the residents inside the home were sleeping at the time of the crash, the sheriff’s office believes the children were asleep, while McCombs and her aunt were awake. McCombs was pronounced dead at the scene.
