Your questions answered: Roommate's new flat gets a remote control

I’m usually obsessed with making sure that my house is impeccably maintained, but recently I have found that renting a new flat has made me even more obsessed with it. The problem is that every single flat I see also has a remote and a remote control. The landlord always offers each one to me on a pay-as-you-go basis, and when they are paid I can take as long as I like with them!

So now I’m trying to find an automated cleaner which can sort my flat out remotely. Surely it can’t be that complicated?

I’ve looked at “room service” companies which will vacate my flat while I go away and collect the cleaning from the landlord, as well as time cleaning packages. They go to my front door and they are also supposed to have “preapproved” members as cleaners for my flat. I’ve not managed to find one yet, so what do you think I should do?

Guardian readers have provided a wealth of answers. Whether that would work, and whether the landlord would end up paying for those two cleaning packages and the remote control, are extremely important, because renting isn’t just about your own comfort – it’s also about security, and how much it’s going to cost you.
